Meet the Uninfected. They're the select few who were immune to the attacks, or just got off scot-free. They're part of a program called Safening, which is being conducted to see how well a couple of gifted kids can manage to stop the worldwide spread of attacks. It's a whirlwind, all right, and the fate of the entire world lies on the shoulders of these kids.

Before the attacks, there wasn’t a single girl who could rival the sweetness of Jackie. She was everything any girl could ever dream of being. Straight-A student, talented singer, a writer… everyone said she was even on her way to stardom. Then, her abilities started to kick in around the time of the attacks on Nashville, her hometown, and she blames herself every day for her family’s death. She tells herself every morning when she wakes up and every night before she goes to bed that the reason her house burnt down was her. She started the fire. She could’ve put it out, and she didn’t. Jackie hasn’t spoken a word since arriving at Safening. She’s a traumatized mute. And she wants more than anything to speak again, to sing again, to laugh again… but it’s going to take someone incredibly special to make that happen for her.
